Improved tropospheric ozone profile retrievals using OMI and TES radiances

چکیده
[1] We perform a study for characterizing the vertical resolution of tropospheric ozone profile retrievals from the combination of simulated ultraviolet (UV) and thermal infrared (TIR) observations that are representative of the EOS Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES). Under the low thermal contrast conditions used for this simulation, we find that estimating ozone profiles by combining UV and TIR radiances results in a factor of two or more improvement in the ability to resolve boundary layer ozone, as compared with either instrument alone. In addition, there is a substantial improvement in the vertical resolution of ozone in the free troposphere (between 20% and 60%) as compared to the TES vertical resolution. This study points towards the importance of combining multiple spectral regions for dramatically improving the sounding of tropospheric trace gases. Citation: Worden, J., X. Liu, K. Bowman, K. Capturing time and vertical variability of tropospheric ozone: A study using TES nadir retrievals
[1] In this paper, the vertical resolution for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) nadir ozone retrievals is established and is used to assess the ability of TES to capture time variations of ozone in the troposphere. This characterization is based on retrievals of ozone using simulated radiances generated from ozonesonde profiles taken over Bermuda from 14 April to 25 May 1993. To that en...

[1] We characterize and validate the cloud products from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) by comparing TES estimates of effective cloud optical depth and cloud top height to those from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (on EOS) (MODIS), the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and to simulated data. TES measures in the infrared spectral region (650–2260 cm ), where c...

[1] The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) is an infrared, high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer which was launched onboard NASA’s Aura satellite in 2004 and is providing global, vertically resolved measurements of ozone in the troposphere. TES version 2 (V002) data profiles have been validated in the troposphere and lower stratosphere by way of comparison to ozonesondes and airc...

We analyze the theoretical basis of three different methods to validate and intercompare satellite measurements of atmospheric composition, and apply them to tropospheric ozone retrievals from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). The first method (in situ method) uses in situ vertical profiles for absolute instrument validation; it is limited b...

This study presents annual simulations of tropospheric ozone and related species made for the first time using the WRF-Chem model over South Asia for the year 2008. The model-simulated ozone, CO, and NOx are evaluated against ground-based, balloon-borne and satellite-borne (TES, OMI and MOPITT) observations. The comparison of model results with surface ozone observations from seven sites and CO...
